JAY COOKE STATE PARK is located three miles east of Carlton, Minnesota, on State Trunk Highway 210 in Carlton County. State highway map index: L-10.

Even though the DNR map for this park does not boast any waterfalls, there are plenty to see.

The first falls that you will see are partially man made. This part of the park is named Thomson Reservoir.  There is parking on either side of the St Louis River. You will also find plenty areas to hike to do your exploration. This dam area is a beauty to see. In the distance you can see the dam that was built but the falls and rapids that are created by this dam are free flowing.  When you look around at the rapids and mini falls you forget that there is a dam in the background making this site possible.

While hiking around you will see the rocks that are laced with iron ore. There is an area that has greywacke stone; it is a type rock that has sandstone and other sediment along with quartz. When hiking on the slate rock please be careful; they are slippery when wet and there is plenty of slate in that area.

Leaving Thomson Reservoir you go northeast for about 3 miles and you will find Jay Cook proper. There is a lot of beautiful scenery along this route. The road there is bumpy and winds around following the St Louis River. Once you get to the main entrance you will find a large park with generous space provided for picnickers. The park has provided a nice shelter area for gatherings. You will find a small vending area inside and the park office. They also offer classes on various things there throughout the year.

Once you have hiked across the park you come to the Suspension Bridge. From there you can see all of the rapids and waterfalls. You can spy all the trails that you might like to follow. You will see in the middle of the St Louis River a small island that separates the  river in two. Its nice to cross the river and see all sites from a different angle.

At Jay Cook they have a fairly large camping area. If you want to book a site you can go to the website for the Minnesota DNR and make a reservation. Just to let you know its one of the more popular camp grounds and books up fast.
