After all that fun at Gabbro Falls, it was
time to see the long awaited Bond and Agate
Falls. We had known about these two giants
when we had visited the Upper Peninsula in
December, but didn't have time to get that
far in, and decided to see them in the
Spring when they were peaking. After doing
the entire North Shore Spring Thaw we had
run into rainy weekends, which nixed our
long journey plans. We would wait for
sunshine to go that far, even though I was
chomping at the bit to get there.
As we neared the smaller of the two, Agate
Falls, we started to get pretty excited. We
were finally here - oh my gosh we were
finally here! The signs brought us to a rest
stop run by the Department of Transportation
(DoT). That was unusual, all the rest stops
with waterfalls had been run by the
Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in MN,
WI and Canada. We hoped we weren't on a wild
goose chase, duped into visiting some
over-hyped little nothing so many miles from
home.
We followed the short path to a boardwalk,
and saw a large cascade way down through the
trees that was nearly obscured and not very
approachable. The boardwalk continued, so we
followed it to the end where we saw some
more cascades and the top of our target,
Agate Falls.
It was big, all right. But what kind of a
dumb view is this? No way, we were hopping
the fence. I turned to tell Kathy my
thoughts, but she was already on the way
down. I saw her scaling a difficult part of
the steep, pine needle-covered ravine and
wondered if there was another way. I weaved
back and forth until I reached the river,
which was quite scenic.
Meanwhile, Kathy had found what appeared to
be a bear cave, but did not appear mauled
when I ran into her.
Agate falls looked much cooler from down
here,
and I wondered if I could get some close-ups
from the side.
I managed somehow to get pretty far up the
wet red cliff so I could take some pictures and
video clips.
Okay, that was better than expected, now it
was time to check out Bond Falls. We arrived
there quickly and easily found the main
entrance to a loop-path that went over these
twins,
then past a series of cascades,

then past the Bond Falls
Rapids,

to the top of Bond Falls.
The path turned into steps going way down
along the side of the falls, with a platform
halfway down that was so close to Bond you
could touch it.
The steps finally ended, with the next good
view of the bottom of Bond falls.
As I rounded the corner, catching another
cool view;
I realized I had only been looking at half
of the falls. Holy Smokes! This baby was a
wide one!
This side was pretty darn big, too!
Feeling like we had captured the essence of
Bond with a lot of bonus-shots to boot, we
headed back to our car. However... there
were more opportunities on the way. First
Kathy snapped this cool but out of
service man-made stepping stone path across
the river,
then she disappeared again, returning
excitedly minutes later with the
winning Critter-of-the-Day shot (A-GAIN!!)
No, not this one, but I like it.
or else this one. Which do you pick?
